10 reasons your website isn't converting (and what you can do about it)

One of the most common things I hear from business owners is "My website is broken" or "My website is getting traffic but no sales."

Your website probably isn't broken!!

More often than not, it's a combination of small issues that are making it harder for customers to trust your business, find what they're looking for and therefore purchase/enquire.

Here are ten of the most common reasons I see.

1. Your website doesn't clearly explain what you do

When someone lands on your homepage, they should know within a few seconds exactly what you sell, who it's for and why they should choose you. If visitors have to figure it out themselves, many won't stick around.

2. It's slow to load

If a website takes too long to load, we are leaving! A slow website doesn't just frustrate customers, it can also impact your visibility in search engines. Improving your site's speed is often one of the quickest ways to create a better experience for both visitors and search engines.

3. Your navigation is confusing

Your customers should have a clear path to conversion. Your customers shouldn't have to hunt for info. If your menu is cluttered, products are difficult to find or important pages are buried, people are more likely to leave before they ever reach checkout.

4. You're attracting the wrong audience

Traffic doesn't always equal sales. If your SEO, ads or social media are bringing in people who were never likely to buy, your conversion rate will naturally be lower. The goal isn't more visitors, it's the right visitors.

5. Your product pages don't answer enough questions

Before someone buys, they want confidence. They want to see multiple images, understand the sizing, know what materials are used and find important details like shipping, returns, ingredients or care instructions. The more questions you answer upfront, the fewer reasons customers have to leave without making a purchase.

6. Your website doesn't build trust

People buy from businesses they trust. Customer reviews, testimonials, clear policies, secure payment options, professional photography and an authentic About page all help reassure customers they're making the right decision. Trust isn't built by one thing, it's built through lots of small details working together.

7. You're focusing on design instead of strategy

A beautiful website doesn't automatically convert. The top performing websites balance design with usability, speed, content, SEO and clear customer journeys. Design should support your business goals, not distract from them.

8. Your calls-to-action aren't clear

Every page should guide visitors towards a clear next step, whether that's booking a consultation, shopping your collection or requesting a quote. When people aren't shown what to do next, they're much more likely to leave without taking any action.

9. Your website isn't being maintained

Launching your website isn't the finish line, it's just the beginning! Customer behaviour, search engines and technology are constantly changing. The businesses that continue to grow are the ones that regularly update, improve and optimise their websites over time.

10. You're trying to fix the symptoms instead of the problem

Many businesses assume they need more traffic, while others think they need a complete website redesign. In reality, the issue is often much simpler. It could be a confusing homepage, a slow checkout, poor product descriptions or weak SEO. Before investing in a new website or another marketing campaign, it's worth understanding what's actually holding your business back.

So... why isn't your website working?

Sometimes the reason your website isn't converting is obvious and sometimes it's a series of small issues adding up over time. That's why every project at Base Code starts with strategy, helping identify the biggest opportunities before recommending any changes. The goal isn't just a better-looking website, it's one that helps your business grow.
